Living without electricity and internet in the present world
Let us assume that it is evening at the moment you are reading this, since you may not be in the same country and time zone as other readers. Right now you are looking at a screen, either on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer. You just finished a delicious dinner which you made by yourself on your electric gas stove. You ate a little bit too much and now you are lying on your couch to let the feeling pass, in front of you the TV is on and the local news is about to start. You turn the volume of the radio down and you make yourself a coffee. While watching the news you are also chatting with your friends on your smartphone and already thinking of the lovely hot shower you are going to take before you go to bed.
Imagine how your evening would have looked like if you did not have electricity and internet. All the things described above would not be possible and then I did not even write about all the lights that are on in your house that would have left you in total darkness. Can you remember the last time you had no electricity and no internet? If you can, you probably freaked out at that moment and you probably asked yourself the question “What on earth am I going to do now…?”. If you cannot, or even more, if you never experienced a moment without electricity and internet at all, you should realize for a second how much input technology has on your life.
In the present world we are so dependent on electricity and internet that most of us just cannot imagine a life without. However, a moment without electricity and internet is not the end of the world. In fact, it can even be good for some of us. Because of all the things that are made possible due to the presence of electricity and other technologies we live our lives faster and faster each day, all while multi-tasking. Talking has been replaced by texting and quantity has become to mean more than quality nowadays. This fast life takes a toll, its effects are for example that our relationships with family and friends suffer and our mental and physical health as well. It is good to slow our lives down for a moment. We need to take more time into account to do the things in our lives right and thereby enjoy them more. The quality of these things in life has to have more meaning again than the quantity. What is a better moment to slow your life down if you do not have access to the internet and if you do not have electricity at all?
The River Kwai Jungle Rafts, an eco floating hotel located on the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, is a perfect place to slow your life down for a moment. The concept of this floating hotel is based on ecological conservation which means that there is no electricity and no internet present, also the network connection is almost always lost. Kerosene lamps are used which ensure a romantic and peaceful atmosphere throughout the whole floating hotel. It is not hard to prepare for a stay here, just come with an open mind, and a flash light. Take your time, relax, enjoy. Do not worry about your online social life and put your smartphone away for this time. Live the moment, experience what is right here and spend time with your loved ones. At the end of your day you will realize that it is not that bad to miss a warm shower, to not have access to the network and Wi-Fi, to talk instead of text and more.
Life goes too fast nowadays, if you do not slow down once in a while, you could miss it.
